I Messed Up Booktag

Today, I am going to do the I Messed Up Booktag which I found on Emily Fox’s channel. I don’t really know how to describe this tag, so without further ado, I’m just going to share the questions with you.

A character appearance that you misread and imagined differently

Oh, I know the perfect answer to this! Ronan Lynch! When I was reading the Raven Cycle, I think I had somehow convinced myself he was black or at least half black. When I went to read Call Down the Hawk, he was described as having pale skin and I was so confused. So yeah I guess I just entirely misread any descriptions of Ronan in TRC, or maybe he wasn’t really described at all there?

A character name that you’ve been pronouncing wrong

Honestly, I think any of the non-Western names I have been pronouncing wrong. I do often look up pronunciation guides especially when I’m reading a book where I’m not sure how things are pronounced. As for author’s names – I live a life of mispronunciation because I never watch interviews (same with actors, I spent years mispronouncing ‘Jai Courtney’ because I never watched any interviews with him). Yeah, I should probably look up how to pronounce things more often.

An overused trope that is your guilty pleasure

Well, I’m not sure if it’s ‘overused’ but my favourite trope is the found family trope. Also even though I am not a huge fan of romance, I do really love the enemies to lovers and friends to lovers tropes.

A cliché character type that you like better on screen than reading about

Hmm, I had to look up some cliché character types, and out of those, I like the Reluctant Hero the most. And honestly, I do also like reading about those in books. And yes that does also kind of include the ‘chosen one’ character. I love those.

A word/phrase that you learned because of its use in a book

I learned a lot of English sayings while reading books. As a Dutchie, we have a lot of sayings as well, but not a lot translate into English and vice-versa.

Have you ever not read or completed a required reading for school?

Probably… It’s been way too long since I’ve been to a school that had required reading, but I think there were a couple of books I never finished. We never had to read any classics, just YA books (even though they weren’t called YA books at the time) but we weren’t allowed to read translated books (so Dutch authors only). I once had to read Turks Fruit (Translated into Turkish Delight) by Jan Wolkers, which I ended up skim-reading because I hated it. (Who lets a fourteen/fifteen-year-old read TURKISH DELIGHT?!)

Have you ever (or wanted to) skipped a chapter from the POV of a character you weren’t interested in.

No, but I always reluctantly read from that person’s POV. And if that person has a huge POV-part in the story, I do sometimes lower the rating of the book overall…

Have you ever cancelled social plans to read a book?

I don’t really have much of a social life, so no. But I have celebrated someone else cancelling plans because that meant I could continue being a hermit. Also if I do go out, I always bring a book (or my kindle) with me so I can read whenever stuff gets boring.

What about you? I believe you can actually tag people for this, so consider yourself tagged!
