I saw this unpopular opinion book tag on Cuddlebuggery and decided I wanted to do it too. So yeah, I am not going to make this intro any longer, let me tell you about my unpopular opinions!
A popular book/series you didn’t like
I guess this isn’t really an unpopular opinion, because I think it’s more 50/50, but I just hate the Mortal Instruments. I didn’t enjoy the first two books at all, and I disliked the third so much I didn’t even finish it. I watched the movie twice, but couldn’t enjoy it that much more than the books, and I honestly don’t know if I even want to watch the TV series (though I do now have a Netflix account so I can actually watch it if I want to). I am planning on reading the spin-off/prequel series The Infernal Devices, but honestly I don’t expect too much of it. Even though I’ve heard from lots of people it’s better than TMI.
A book series everyone hates but you love
Okay technically Allegiant isn’t an entire book series, but just one book in a series – but so many people hated it. And I guess that’s only because of the major death at the end of this book. I did not hate this book at all, I loved it. Sure it may have been a bit too long – and the dubble narration was annoying (because Tris and Four sounded exactly the same), but gods I just love this bookseries so much. I hate the deaths that happened, but they are just part of what made the book so good. It shows that not everything can end with ‘happily ever afters’, and that sometimes people just die. So yeah, I am going to say it: I loved Allegiant by Veronica Roth!
A love triangle where the MC ended up with the person you didn’t want them to end up with
Ehhh, well honestly nine out of ten times I am so good at ‘chosing’ a side (if I even do that) that the main character actually ends up with, but I guess that the Throne of Glass series isn’t really going the way I want it to. Yes, the series isn’t over yet, there are still two more books coming out, but I don’t think my ship is going to sail anymore. I ship Celaena and Chaol very much, and this last book has crushed my hope for them getting together so so much. I really don’t like Rowan and I don’t want Celaena to end up with him, but yeah – I’ve kind of made peace with the fact that my ship isn’t going to happen anymore.. *sighs*
A popular book genre you rarely reach for
New adult, because honestly I don’t like books that are mostly about sex. I don’t like regular books in which characters have sex because I just don’t like sex. So I would never willingly pick up a new adult book, unless I am genuenly interested in general storyline. I’ll probably just skip the sexy parts then, I guess.
A popular beloved character you didn’t like
Snape, Snape, Severus Snape. Snape, Snape, Severus Snape. Yeah sorry got a little bit carried away there. But yes, I don’t like Snape. I mean sure, his life is tragic and he’s had a rough time at school when he was a student. But he’s a bully, and n o t h i n g justifies that. NOTHING. Even Alan Rickman couldn’t make me like him. *shrugs*
A popular author you can’t seem to get into
Okay this might be a bit strange, but I am going to say J.R.R. Tolkien. I love his books, honestly, but they are so big and they take me such a long time to read the books. And that is mostly due to his detailed writing. It took me almost a month to finish the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, and that was only because I forced myself to read it at some points. I have picked up The Silmarillion and put it down at least ten times in the past two years, and I honestly don’t know if I’m ever going to read any of his other books.
I guess I’ll just pick up audiobooks instead, because I just can’t get myself to concentrate long enough to actually remember what I just read. Sorry professor. I love the world you’ve created, but I think I’ll just watch the movies instead of rereading the books. (Except for The Hobbit, that’s much easier to read/remember).
Popular trope you’re tired of seeing
Love triangles. Just get them out of my face, okay? Also the fact that as soon as the main character meets their love interest, the story is more about them getting together rather than the actual problem happening in the world. I am just annoyed by this and I am just so so so done with love triangles in every goddamn young adult book!!!!!!
Popular series you have no interest in reading
Twilight. I tried once to read the first book, but I just couldn’t get through it. It was just so bad and ugh and why do people read this? I have watched the first three movies, I guess, but I am not planning on rewatching those nor am I planning on watching the rest of the movies, because it’s bad and get it away from me!
The saying goes, “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie/tv show do you prefer over the book?
Like Steph, who I got this tag from, I am going to say The 100. The book was so bad, and I just couldn’t get through it. I DNF-ed the first book at a little over 50% and never picked it up again (thank the gods I got it from Netgalley for free). Then, I started watching the TV show, and the first episode was just SO MUCH BETTER than the entire first half of the book. I haven’t watched anything of the third season yet, because I haven’t been in the mood to watch TV shows that much the last couple of weeks, but I still love the show so much more than I will ever love the books.
