Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a ragtag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.
A couple of months ago, my friends and I decided to do a Star Wars marathon, because two of us (me included) had never seen the older movies before. Schoked? Yeah well, when I was younger (at the time the prequel trilogy came out) I was too busy with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean to be interested in Star Wars. But when the new movie was announced, I wanted to know what the hype was about, and whether it was worth it.
Honestly, I didn’t really love the previous six movies. They were enjoyable, but they were each so long and so much happened all at once in each movie, yeah idk I just didn’t like them so much. Also I’m just not a big fan of older movies. I always say I don’t want to watch anything older than I am, as a joke, but actually that’s kind of true. I’m such a fan of CGI (especially in modern movies) and though I do like the special effects used in older movies, I just really love new movies more. I was really interested in them though, because of the spacey-wacey element (I am a sucker for anything science fiction) so yes I did enjoy them, and honestly and I enjoyed I, II, and III more than IV, V, and VI because they were newer. Sorry not sorry.
Anyway, on Monday we went to see The Force Awakens, the seventh movie in the series. Before, I’d seen plenty of trailers and pictures of the movie, and heard about a lot of actors that had roles or cameos in this movie. My favourite? Andy Serkis. I loved him as Gollum and he had a small role in my number one movie of 2015, Age of Ultron. So yeah, I was really excited to see him in this movie. And I really wanted to see the old trio (Han, Leia and Luke) in this movie as well.
As for the new cast, I only knew Oscar Isaac because he’s playing Apocalypse in the new X-Men movie (coming out in May) and that was about it. I thought I knew John Boyega, but apparently he just looks a lot like someone else whose name I can’t even remember (sorry). And I knew absolutely nothing about Daisy Ridley. But these three completely stole my heart. Poe, Finn and Rey are a great new trio and I can’t wait to see more of them in the upcoming two movies.
But the ones that had completely stolen my heart, after all seven movies, were Chewbacca, C3PO, R2D2 and the newest addition, BB-8! I loved the two robots in the previous movies, and I thought Chewbacca was amazing; but BB-8 was probably the most adorable thing of this entire movie. My friend commented that every time he (she?) was on screen, my other friend and I would go ‘awwwww’.
Unfortunately, the fact that we didn’t go and see it almost immediately after it came out, caused me to get spoiled. Not a lot, but enough that I didn’t really enjoy the movie as much as I wanted to. Because I am not a dick, I’ll post these spoilers underneath a tag. DO NOT READ THESE UNLESS YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE! View Spoiler »I already knew that Kylo Ren was Leia and Han’s son. I also knew that there was going to be a major death but thank the gods I didn’t knew who it was – until about five minutes before it happened. I wasn’t as shocked as I probably should have been, because I already knew it was going to happen. And I also knew that it was rumoured that Rey was Luke Skywalker’s daughter. I know it’s not really a spoiler because it’s not confirmed, but there were some hints in the movie, and I really wanted to find that out by myself. But thanks to the internet, that didn’t happen. *sighs* « Hide Spoiler
So yeah, the reason I haven’t given it a full five stars, was mainly because of the spoilers (not the movie’s fault of course, but yeah it kind of ruined some parts for me) and because – like with the previous movies – there was so much happening. The movie was about 2 hours long, and honestly even though it was action packed, I really wanted the movie to be over after a while. Maybe I’m just getting too old to be watching a long movie (please let that not be the reason?!)
In the end, I really really liked this seventh Star Wars movie. Much more than the previous six, and I will definitely be watching it again. I am excited for the next one, and though I still don’t really get the hype around the entire film series, I do get why people love this new movie so much!
