On the fourth day of BOTY my true love gave to me I will post about more movies! This time the movies I’ve seen this year that were released in previous years. This year was the year that I finally watched movies in several franchises that I had never seen before – Star Wars, James Bond, Marvel – and unfortunately only one of those really impressed me (I guess the answer is obvious). Anyway, here are my favourite pre-2015 movies! Again, they are in no particular order! Because I haven’t posted reviews of all of these movies, I’ll just give my opinion on them in a few sentences.

If I Stay
by R.J. Cutler
Released on: 18 September 2014

Synopsis: Life changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined. The choice is hers if she can go on.

Cast: Chloë Grace Moretz, Mireille Enos, Jamie Blackley, Joshua Leonard, Liana Liberato, Stacy Keach, Gabrielle Rose, Jakob Davies.

My opinion: I had read the book two years ago I believe and I didn’t really love it. I liked it, it was a good book – apart from the flashbacks (but that was very obvious); so honestly I wasn’t expecting that much from the movie. Maybe also the reason I didn’t see it in the cinema, but when I finally saw it it was amazing. I cried during the parts that I didn’t cry at when reading the book. It was really a great movie, and I secretly hope they’ll make a movie out of the second book as well!

Big Hero 6
by Don Hall, Chris Williams
Released on: 11 February 2014

Synopsis: The special bond that develops between plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax, and prodigy Hiro Hamada, who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.

Cast: Scott Adsit, Ryan Potter, Daniel Henney, T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans, Genesis Rodriguez, James Cromwell.

My opinion: A Disney/Marvel movie? Count me in! This was honestly one of Disney’s best movies, in my opinion; I loved it so much. It is also a movie that broke my heart at least twice and gods I never thought I’d cry about an inflatable healthcare robot. Damn you Disney and Marvel (two companies that had me cry about lots of strange things; such as talking trees that can only say ‘I am Groot’). Honestly this movie is prefect for lovers of both animated movies and Marvel heroes! Also this movie has in my opinion one of Stan Lee’s best cameo’s. I always love seeing him in a Marvel movie, and this time he was animated and I believe it was also one of his proudest moments, aww!

The Amazing Spider-Man (1+2) by Marc Webb
Released on: 28 June 2012

Synopsis: After Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically altered spider, he gains newfound, spider-like powers and ventures out to solve the mystery of his parent’s mysterious death.

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Chris Zylka.

My opinion: Honestly I didn’t want to watch this movie. I have arachnaphobia (perhaps not that badly, but I do get itches all over my body whenever I see/think about a spider so yeah) so watching a movie about a guy becoming spider-man? Yeah, no. But I did want to watch all the Marvel movies. So I decided to ‘man up’ and watch this movie. It was really nice and though there were some itches here and there (like all over my body for a full twenty minutes) I enjoyed it and I really like Andrew as Peter better than the other guy who played him – whose name I forgot (oops). Part two was really cool too though the ending really broke my heart (I had expected it, because I’d seen gifs of those scenes all over tumblr already – that’s what you get for waiting so long – but I hadn’t expected to cry so hard about it. Ugh).

by Joe Wright
Released on: 1 November 2007

Synopsis: Fledgling writer Briony Tallis, as a 13-year-old, irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister’s lover of a crime he did not commit. Based on the British romance novel by Ian McEwan.

Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Brenda Blethyn, Julia West, James Mcavoy, Harriet Walter, Keira Knightley, Juno Temple, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alfie Allen

My opinion: This year, a friend of mine became a huge James Mcavoy fan, so we went to watch a lot of movies he’s in. Atonement was one of them and I honestly think this was one of the best. I am personally a huge ‘fan’ of World War II movies and stories so I had this one on my to-watch list for a long while. Though the movie is a bit strange with some repeated scenes every now and then (memories from the POV’s of different characters), I did really like it. The reveal at the end was quite sad though!

Into the Woods by Robert Schwentke
Released on: 18 March 2015

Synopsis: A witch tasks a childless baker and his wife with procuring magical items from classic fairy tales to reverse the curse put on their family tree.

Cast: Anna Kendrick, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Lilla Crawford, Daniel Huttlestone, Mackenzie Mauzy, Frances de la Tour

My opinion: I love Disney movies, and I love their songs. Though personally I am not a huge fan of movies that is mainly singing. I did really love this movie though, it was really nice and it had some normal talking through it. The second part of the story – after the supposed happy ending – was a bit strange though, and it felt a bit too long in my opinion. But yeah, not everything can be happy happy – not even in fairy tales!

by Danny DeVito
Released on: 19 December 1996

Synopsis: Story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable.

Cast: Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, Embeth Davidtz, Pam Ferris, Paul Reubens, Tracey Walter.

My opinion: Can you believe that before this year, I had never seen this movie? No, well, I had never seen this movie before this year. I don’t know why, but I do regret not seeing it sooner, because it’s really a great movie. It has really made me want to pick up the book, so I guess I’ll do that next year!

The Three Musketeers by Paul W.S. Anderson
Released on: 13 October 2011

Synopsis: The hot-headed young D’Artagnan along with three former legendary but now down on their luck Musketeers must unite and defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war.

CastOrlando Bloom, Christoper Waltz, Logan Lerman, Luke Evans, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, James Cordon, Mads Mikkelsen, Milla Jovovich, Freddie Fox, Juno Temple.

My opinion: Okay this may be the movie with the lowest rating out of all these, but I did really enjoy it. I never really was interested in the Three Musketeers story – I thought it sounded interesting, but idk – but then I heard that some amazing actors were in this movie. Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, Logan Lerman – I have seen movies with all three of them (I even met one of them <3) and yeah they were great. This movie was great too, it just wasn’t the greatest. I really mainly loved all the action – the sword fighting, the explosions – and Orlando Bloom’s facial expressions.

Stardust by Kenneth Branagh
Released on: 18 March 2015

Synopsis: In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he’ll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.

Cast: Charlie Cox, Ben Barnes, Sienna Miller, Henry Cavill, Nathaniel Parker, Mark Strong, Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, Ricky Gervais

My opinion: This movie was so beautiful! We mainly wanted to watch it because of Charlie Cox (because he played Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the TV show) and we ended up loving the entire movie. It’s based on a book by Neil Gaiman, so I kind of get it. It’s also directed by Matthew Vaughn, so I get it even more. This movie had (sky)pirates, witches, a fallen star, and a guy whose hair magically grew during a haircut (It’s like the Sims). It’s great great, everyone should watch it!

X-Men (old movies)
by Bryan Singer
Released on: 28 September 2000

Synopsis: Two mutants come to a private academy for their kind whose resident superhero team must oppose a terrorist organization with similar powers.

Cast: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Halle Barry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Anna Paquin, Tyler Mane, Rebecca Romijn.

My opinion: I believe a lot of people won’t agree with me, but I loved these older movies. I had never fully seen them before this year, but because I’d watched the newer ones (which I loved too), I decided to watch these as well. Mainly because I just wanted more Hugh Jackman… 😉 They may not be the most amazingly shot movies in those times (I mean Lord of the Rings came out at around the same time and those were so so so great), but I just like the story and ugh I just really like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as Charles and Erik okay?! Also little bit Dutch price, because Jean Grey is played by a Dutchie, yay!

All three Iron Man movies
by different directors
Released on: 1 May 2008

Synopsis: After being held captive in an Afghan cave, an industrialist creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil.

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Paul Bettany, Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges.

My opinion: After finally watching these three movies, I want to travel back in time and slap myself for not wanting to watch them. Because honestly before I watched these movies, I wasn’t such a bit fan of Tony. Now: I love him. He’s great, he’s got humour and he has his heart in the right place – even if there are pieces of shrapnel in there trying to kill him. I loved these three movies, and the friendship with Rhody best. And gods, who doesn’t want one of his suits?!

Trailer | My Full Review | Purchase on Amazon | Purchase on Bol.com | IMDb

And those were my favourite movies released in previous years. I kind of cheated by doing three movies in one go (with X-Men and Iron Man) but I just loved those movies equally and I didn’t want to choose just one of them.

Which of these movies have you watched and loved?
