We’ve all had this; you start a book series, but don’t really enjoy the first book. Then you read a second book, and perhaps even the third book, and it just gets worse and worse. Eventually, you just decide to stop reading and not finish the series at all – no matter how many great reviews the series gets from other people. Here is my list of book series I’ve decided to completely abandon. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme organised by The Broke and the Bookish.
The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare – I guess this one was obvious. I read two books and approx. 66% of the third book, but decided it wasn’t worth my time. I just couldn’t get through this third book anymore and decided to just look up how the series ended on the internet. (So far I still haven’t even done that).
The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski – I decided to read this book because EVERYONE loved it so much, but I didn’t love it. I just couldn’t get myself to feel anything for the characters, and I just didn’t enjoy the story at all. So I guess I won’t be reading the second or third book.
The Selection Series by Kiera Cass – Read the first three books, before it became a five-book series, but, though I didn’t hate it, I wasn’t a fan of it either. I’ve heard from a lot of people that they hate the main character in The Heir, so I guess I just won’t be reading it.
Endgame by James Frey – I hated this book. So so so much. I couldn’t even finish it, because there were so many POV’s. Ugh. Will not be finishing the series!
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan – I enjoyed this story, but at the time I just really wanted to avoid zombie books. And this book was a zombie book in disguise. I hadn’t paid attention to the shelves this book was on (on Goodreads), so I had no idea it was about zombies. Oh well.. I won’t be reading the other two books, mainly also because the characters from this book aren’t in it anymore.
A Song of Ice and Fire by G.R.R. Martin – I half read/half listened to the first book, but didn’t really remember much of it at the end. I skimmed a lot and yeah I guess I’m just not such a fan of this book. Maybe I’ll just watch the TV show instead, if I ever find the time.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams – Such a shame, but I don’t think I’ll be finishing this series. Maybe as audiobooks, but I won’t be reading them. Even though I got the entire series for less than 10 euros; I just don’t know. These books were released in the 70/80’s, and yeah I don’t know, I just don’t really like the writing style.
The Magisterium series by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare – Got the first book in this series from Netgalley, but if I hadn’t I probably wouldn’t have read it at all. Because this series feels so much like Harry Potter to me (and no that wasn’t meant in a positive way) – I just didn’t enjoy it at all. So no, will not be finishing this!
James Potter series by Norman G. Lippert – I got really excited when I heard about these books, because reading about Harry Potter’s son that went to Hogwarts? Amazing right? Well, no, not really. This fanfic – because that’s what it is – wasn’t great, and I just don’t think I’m going to read the rest – even if they are available for free.
Matched by Ally Condie – Two words: Love triangle. I didn’t enjoy this book, and I gave it away to the Apparating Library at RingCon (I got a Percy Jackson book in return, yay). Maybe I’ll just look up the end of this series on the internet.
