Four young outsiders teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe which alters their physical form in shocking ways. The four must learn to harness their new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
Fantastic Four is about a group of people – Reed Richards (Miles Teller), Sue and Johnny Storm (Kate Mara, Michael B Jordan), Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell), and Victor von Doom (Toby Kebbell) – who get special powers after a trip to another dimension goes wrong. That’s the story in this movie. The previous movie had them getting their powers from a trip to space gone wrong, and I don’t remember what the original comic story was like. To be honest, I never really considered the Fantastic Four to be part of my ‘favourite Marvel heroes’ group, but I just wanted to see the movies to complete my Marvel experience.
Like I said before, I really liked the cast of this movie. I knew Miles from the Divergent movies already where he plays Peter – and I just enjoy his acting. I thought he was a good choice for Reed and it actually made me like Reed a bit more (because yeah honestly, the only FF member I liked before this movie was Johnny Storm, sorry not sorry). Kate and Michael were good choices for the Storm siblings too, and though at first I found it a bit weird that Michael and his father were black and Sue was adopted into the family – I thought ‘why not, that happens too in real life’. I thought Jamie Bell was adorable and felt so sorry for him when he got his ‘power’. And I don’t really have anything to say about Toby because he wasn’t in the movie that much, but I did like his version of Dr. Doom.
This movie wasn’t perfect, of course, and I personally thought it was a bit too short. It was 100 minutes, and the gang didn’t get their powers until halfway through the movie – then, someone escaped and the movie skipped a whole year in which apparently the group got to get used to their new powers and became Government puppets. Then I believe the action sequence was only about twenty minutes long, but it may have been shorter (or longer); it just felt too short. I read somewhere that there was a different version of the movie that had more action – but they got cut to make place for… what exactly? I don’t know what the reshot parts were and what weren’t but honestly I don’t think that the studio made the right choice. I would have loved more action in this movie, because that’s what it’s about right? People getting powers and fighting evil – not them being confined to a room and doing the Government’s dirty jobs.
So yeah, in my opinion the movie could have been much better, but I did enjoy watching it. I’m afraid there won’t be a sequel because this movie didn’t get that much positive reviews, but there’s a tiny bit of hope that it will happen. In the end, I enjoyed Fantastic Four – despite the bad reviews, despite the short-ness of the action – mainly because of the cast, and I will certainly rewatch it in the future.
For those who are uncertain if they should watch this movie or not, I can only say: just watch it. Form your own opinion on it, don’t adopt other people’s opinions as your own. Don’t judge a movie (or book or whatever) by their reviews. Reviews are still a person’s opinion, doesn’t matter who wrote them. Those reviews on your favourite website, in the magazine you read every week; they are still written by people who may have different interests than you. Go and see for yourself!
