Guess what… It’s nearly July, the year is almost half over! I bet I’m not the only one who will say that this year is going quite fast already… Anyway, I am here to give you this year’s Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag. I’ve done this tag before, and I really enjoy doing it, so I’ll probably be doing it for the rest of my blogging life! So, let’s get started!
1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2019
Hmm, most of the 5-star books I’ve read so far have been rereads… But I did very recently (aka yesterday) finish Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff and fell head-over-heels in love with it. I loved the character, I loved the story, I loved that it was so different from Illuminae but also so similar. Yes Amie and Jay managed to make me laugh, cry and fall in love all over again!
I also very much loved rereading the Twilight Princess manga series by Akira Himekawa. My best friend managed to get early copies of the fifth volume, which doesn’t come out until July/August and I loved reading that volume as well! Definitely recommend if you’re a fan of Twilight Princess or just Legend of Zelda in general!
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2019
This one has to go to the Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud! I fell in love with the first book last year and after finishing this book, I immediately ordered the rest of the books in the series. (I have yet to pick them up, but you know, it’s the thought that counts!). If you want a nice spooky read, pick up the Lockwood & Co. series!
3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to
Y’all… I still need to read King of Scars by my queen Leigh Bardugo. I KNOW. First I wanted to reread all the other books in this world, and then I was just a little bit scared. Because I heard some mixed things about the book, and I wasn’t sure if I was ready to be disappointed or not. But it is happening next month, I SWEAR!
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
I am definitely excited for Leigh’s new book, Ninth House! And Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell. And the Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee. Those are the three books I currently have pre-ordered. Also there’s a book called Tarnished are the Stars by Rosiee Thor which features an asexual (and aromantic?) character and I am all for that ace/aro rep!
5. Biggest disappointment
Ok, so I did rate this one 3 stars, but I expected so much more from Saga. I heard only great things about this graphic novel series, but honestly when I read the first volume I thought it was a bit ‘meh’. I still loved the art style and there were parts of the story I liked, but other than that it just didn’t manage to grasp me. I did continue the series, because a friend had the first six volumes, but it never picked up for me, unfortunately…
6. Biggest surprise
Again another 3 star, but I was very surprised that I really enjoyed My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent! This book was written around the time when books as the Hunger Games, Twilight and Divergent and such were popular, so I wasn’t expecting a lot of it. But while there were things I did indeed not enjoy, it also wasn’t as cringe-worthy as I had expected.. I do plan on continuing this series at some point, but yeah it was a nice read!
7. Favourite new author (Debut or new to you)
Through Scribd, I discovered this graphic novel series called The Woods, written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Michael Dialynas. I absolutely loved that series and read all nine volumes one after the other. I have read some of his other work since and though I liked that I didn’t love it as much, but yeah I will use him for this question damnit!
8. Newest fictional crush
Can I just say everyone from Squad 312?!
9. Newest favourite character
Can I use the same answer as for the previous question? Because I will. Squad 312 forever.
10. Book that made you cry
11. Book that made you happy
Reading Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann made me happy because asexual rep yes PLEASE!
12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)
I finally managed to get my hands on the out-of-print art book of the Book of Life! The director of the movie, Jorge Gutiérrez tweeted about this place in LA that had the last couple of these books and that they would all be signed by him and I decided to TREAT MYSELF and buy one of the books. It arrived in May and I am stil crying because I have it. And it’s signed. And my heart is literally so so happy right now!
13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
Definitely King of Scars. Also I want to reread Harry Potter and annotate them. And I also need to finish the Lockwood & Co series… There are so many books I need to read this year omg I need a time turner!
Anyway, that concluces the Mid Year Book Freak Out tag! Which 2019 releases have you not read yet?
