We’re halfway through the year, so it is time for the mid-year book freak out tag. I did this tag last year as well, and am probably going to continue this tradition for the upcoming years. Basically, it’s like the End of the Year Survey, but for the first six months only. I don’t know who originally created it, as I found it on Tumblr last time and this year I’ve got it from Quite the Novel Idea. Let’s do this.
Best book you’ve read so far this year
Honestly, this has got to go to the Rogue One novelization. It made me fall in love with the movie even more, and I had no idea that was even possible. It also broke my heart so much more than the movie did and ah, yes I love it so much!
Best sequel you’ve read so far this year
Alwyn Hamilton’s Traitor to the Throne had me gasp out loud with that ending, oh my gods it was incredible! I cannot wait for the third book to come out, though that won’t happen until next year, unfortunately.
New release you haven’t read yet but want to
I still haven’t read Windwitch, which is the sequel to Susan Dennard’s Truthwitch. I did recently buy a copy of this book, but I kind of want to refresh my memory of the first book. Not sure if I’m going to reread the entire book or just read a summary/recap on the internet though.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
This definitely has to be Stolen by Lucy Christopher. Man, I hated that book. I heard so many great things about it, but in the end, it was honestly the biggest disappointment, so far.
Hmm, I have two answers that would be good for this one. The first one is Angelfall by Susan Ee. I hadn’t expected to enjoy this book so much, but it ended up being an amazing book and totally not at all a Twilight but with angels type of book. The other surprise was the novelization of The Force Awakens. I had heard so many bad things about this book, but I actually quite enjoyed it. It wasn’t as great as the RO novelization, but still really good.
Favourite new author
Hmm, I can’t say I really have a new favourite author, but I did discover a few new ones that I enjoyed. Susan Ee is a good one, I will definitely pick up more of her books in the future, and also I loved Skottie Young’s Giant-Size Little Marvel. I added some more of his graphic novels to my TBR and am planning on buying them very soon!
Newest fictional crush
My newest crush is Reid from The Upside of Unrequited. I loved his character so much, and yeah Lord of the Rings, man. Cool. Also, I have a bit of a girl-crush on Kate Bishop, because she is A-MA-ZING. And of course, I still very much love Wanda Maximoff, so that’s why she’s pictured below.
Newest favourite character
Again, have to go with Kate Bishop. And the other characters from the Young Avengers graphic novel that I read.
Book that made you cry
Obviously it’s Rogue One. That book made me sob even harder than the movie. It was much more heartbreaking than the movie was, as we could read the thoughts of the characters View Spoiler »as they died « Hide Spoiler but oh my god this book. THIS. BOOK.
Book that made you happy
Funnily enough, Rogue One was also the book that made me really happy. As did Wires and Nerve, vol. 1 by Marissa Meyer. I loved the fact that we were getting more Lunar Chronicles, ánd that it was a graphic novel! I read it in a day or two and am happily anticipating volume 2!
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)
Cover-wise, the best book I got so far is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the Slytherin edition. It just looks so simple but so beautiful! I love the sprayed edges, I love the cover, I love the inside. Ah yes so so good!
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
I really want to finish the Angelfall series by Susan Ee, so I need to read End of Days very soon. Other than that, I am not really going to tell myself to absolutely read this or that book before the end of the year, because I know I will not hold myself to that…
And that concludes this year’s Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag, damn what a mouthful. Now, I am going back to reading once more, as I still have so many unread books.
