Best of the Year

BOTY ’12: Movies I’ve seen

List number three, five movies that I have watched this year. Not movies that were released this year, I have got a different list for that. Just movies that were relased in previous year, and that I’ve watched for the first time this year. They are in alphabetical order.

1. Johnny English Reborn | Released in 2011 |

Johnny English goes up against international assassins hunting down the Chinese premier. Cast: Rowan Atkinson, Gillian Anderson, Rosamund Pike, Dominic West, Daniel Kaluuya, Burn Gorman. IMDB.

I am not a huge fan of comedies, but I kind of wanted to watch this movie because Burn Gorman (Owen Harper from Torchwood) plays in it. This is a sort of parody on James Bond, I guess, with Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr. Bean) playing the part of Johnny English. I don’t remember if I’ve seen the frist movie (I guess I have), but I enjoyed this one so I guess I’ll (re)watch the first one very soon!

2. The Oxford Murders | Released in 2008 |

At Oxford University, a professor and a grad student work together to try to stop a potential series of murders seemingly linked by mathematical symbols. Cast: Elijah Wood, John Hurt, Leonor Watling, Julie Cox, Burn Gorman. IMDB.

You have Owen Harper, Frodo Baggins and Mr. Ollivander in one movie! I don’t think I would have watched this movie if there had been other actors in it though, but I did enjoy it, which is why it’s in my list (that and the fact that I watched so few ‘new’ movies this year that I had to go to my three-star movies for this list). But ehm yeah it was a very interesting movie, really!

3. Race to Witch Mountain | Released in 2009 |

A Las Vegas cabbie enlists the help of a UFO expert to protect two siblings with paranormal powers from the clutches of an organization that wants to use the kids for their nefarious plans. Cast: Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig. IMDB.

I was going through the IMDB’s of some of the Hunger Games cast members and saw this one in Alexander Ludwig’s list. I thought the title sounded nice, and the summary sounded cool too so I decided to watch it. And it was a very interesting movie, I really enjoyed it. I love science fiction and aliens and stuff, especially stories of aliens on earth, trying to figure out the human race; this is a bit like that, but with the aliens being chased as well.. Yes, nice movie!

4. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows | Released in 2011 |

Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty. Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Stephen Fry, Kelly Riley. IMDB.

The second movie in the Sherlock Holmes series, with Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock and Jude Law as Dr. Watson. I really loved the first movie, so naturally I had to go and watch this second one. We meet Professor Moriarty and there’s a lot more funny things happening to Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson! I believe (or rather hope) there will be a third movie, but I don’t know when this is going to happen.

5. Third Star | Released in 2010 |

James and his three closest lifelong friends go on an ill-advised trip to the stunning coastal area of Barafundle Bay in West Wales. What follows is a touching and comical adventure dealing with friendship, heroism and love. Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Burke, JJ Feild, Adam Robertson. IMDB.

This is such a powerful movie, wow. Benedict Cumberbatch plays a guy named James, who’s been suffering from cancer. He goes on a trip with his three best friends to a remote place. That’s basically all there is to say. I thought it was a very sad and beautiful movie at the same time, and y’all should just go and watch it!
