I found this Tolkien (Book) Tag on someone’s blog a while ago, copied it to my own blog and promptly forgot to finish and post it. Obviously, I also forgot where I got the tag from, but I really wanted to fill it in!

HOW DID YOUR MIDDLE EARTH JOURNEY BEGIN?

I think it was around the time the first or second Lord of the Rings movie had just come out. I was really interested in seeing it, but my older sister thought I’d be too scared of the Nazgûl, so she told me I couldn’t watch them. Obviously, I didn’t listen to them, and though I was a bit scared of them – the thing that terrified me most was Bilbo’s face in Rivendell (y’all know what I’m talking about). I saw the third movie at the cinema with my sister and dad, even though I officially wasn’t old enough.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MIDDLE EARTH BOOK?

I’m going to have to say The Hobbit because even though I did enjoy the LOTR series, I thought them to be a teeny tiny bit boring at a lot of points. The Hobbit is a children’s book, so it was a bit easier to get through. Also, The Hobbit means a great deal to me. Thanks to this book or I should say the movies, HobbitCon happened, and I met quite a bunch of my current friends through that convention. I had four amazing years every time around Easter and I really do miss these conventions!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE?

Honestly, I’ve never really thought about it, but right now the first answer that popped into my mind is Return of the King because it’s so full of epic battles (I mean the battle at Minas Tirith is still my favourite of all time). Hobbit-wise, I’m going to have to go with An Unexpected Journey, because it’s such a lovely movie and I love all the dwarves so much!

MOVIES OR BOOKS?

Again, brutally honest – movies. I thought the Lord of the Rings books were a bit too much, and the battle scenes were often too quickly over or too vaguely described. There was a lot of excessive storytelling that I personally think could have been left out, but it did help the world building of course. No, honestly I prefer the Lord of the Rings movies. As for the Hobbit, I love both very much, though I am leaning more towards the book, which I have reread multiple times since buying it (which wasn’t until 2012, oops?).

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS?

All of the Dwarves in Thorin Oakenshield’s company, really. I mean I love the Hobbits from LOTR and Legolas will forever be my #1 teen crush, but THOSE DWARVES! <3 I am kind of biased because I met a lot of the actors (with the exception of Thorin, Kili and Bofur), but both the characters and actors are so amazing!

WHAT MIDDLE EARTH RACE WOULD YOU BE?

Ideally, I’d be a badass elf, roaming around the woods with my bow and arrow, killing ugly creatures and fighting alongside men, dwarves and hobbits alike during the battles. But realistically I’d probably be a Hobbit. I love eating, I love reading, I love a calm and simple life. A Hobbit’s life for me!

BEST ACTOR/CHARACTER CASTING MATCH?

Oh god, you’re going to make me choose only one, aren’t you? Well, it’s actually really simple, if I think about it – Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. First of all, he looks absolutely amazing as Aragorn, second he is Aragorn, as much as Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark and Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool. PERFECT.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN MIDDLE EARTH?

I really love the Shire, and I would love to visit it one day in New Zealand. Some friends of mine have gone there, and I am absolutely 100% jealous of them all. It looks like the perfect calm environment that I need because I probably would die from anxiety if I’d lived anywhere else.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THE BOOKS OR MOVIES?

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

I love this poem that Tolkien wrote for the Lord of the Rings, and I want to get the second line tattooed on my body in Dwarvish (or perhaps Norse) runes. Apparently this is very popular, as a friend of mine has this too and it’s literally the first thing I find when I google the sentence, but still – I want it.

So that was the Tolkien Tag, let me know if you’re a Tolkien fan and if you’re going to take over this tag, I would love to see your answers!

What’s your favourite Tolkien book?
  • Lies Van Dyck
